About The Department

Human Subjects Research conducted at Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) is reviewed and monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB).  The Department for Research and Evidence-Based Practice assists investigators through the IRB process, provides general information for research subjects and sponsors education for IRB members.

The Department supports investigators  beginning with the study planning phase through dissemination of research findings.  Assistance with study design, sample population determination, methodology, data collection, data analysis, abstract and poster preparation, and manuscript writing are available as needed.

The purpose of  IRB review is to assure that human subjects are ethically and responsibly treated. Appropriate steps must be taken to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects by the investigator(s) including that they give uncoerced, informed consent to participate and that they are not placed at undue risk. Advance and periodic IRB review is a process that accomplishes this purpose. There are instances when certain elements of informed consent can be altered or waived.

The Catawba Valley Med Cnt Institutional Review Board  reviews and monitors research studies when the investigation utilizes human subjects or information about human subjects, which can be employees or patients of CVMC or its subsidiaries.
